Main storyline:

It was about a young boy, Yaiba who was brought up by his father (a prestigious swordsman) with the belief and aim to become the best swordsman in the wild since young. He had a tiger (Titan) and a vulture (Valtus) as friends who in turn, aided him during his initial stage of his practice.

Later, they smuggled to Japan to meet a girl, Sayaka and her father. Sayaka had a granny who was wise and good in martial arts. Sayaka and her father themselves also learnt Kendo.

In Japan, Yaiba encountered his first and lifelong opponent, Takeshi Onimaru. They soon became swore enemies. Later, Takeshi Onimaru obtained and controlled an ancient sword after being defeated by Yaiba in a dual. The sword was passed down from his ancestor. He soon possessed the power of wind. Yaiba seeks the aid of Musashi Miyamoto, who guards the legendary Sword of the Thunder God.

With the help of Sayaka, Titan and Valtus, and others that he finds along the way, Yaiba collects the seven magical spheres and confronts Takeshi and his henchmen.

His success in completing the Sword of the Thunder God awakens Princess Moon, the ancient enemy of the Thunder God, from her deep slumber. She gathers her minions to once again try to conquer earth. Yaiba and Takeshi must now set aside their personal differences to defend their home planet.

Takayama Minami, who voices for Edogawa Conan in Detectiveconan, casts for the voice of Yaiba Kurogame. There are 22 mangas in Yaiba.

Remarks on Yaiba:

  • Strong resemblance of  Dragon Ball.
  • There is a lot of fightings and adventures throughout the story. I like its ending, it is heart-warming.
  • The style of drawing keeps reminding me of the first few mangas of Detectiveconan and Kaito Kid.
  • Special fighting tactics. Example, closing eyes to visualise the movement of his opponent.

  • Favourite part: It was several years after Yaiba's disappearance, Sayaka had grown up to a teenager. She could not forget the times she had spent, roaming for adventures with Yaiba. One day, Yaiba appeared on his sword, flying into Sayaka's classroom. He had grown tall. Pulling Sayaka, he asked her to accompany him to solve some difficult problems. Together, they flew on his thunder sword away.

  • Throughout the story, I find Yaiba's character very innocent, yet determined. However, I dislike some of his qualities. He likes to force his opponent to fight with him, especially if they are stronger than him. He can resort by all means to start a fight with them using childish traps, like, digging holes. Besides, he is very curious of bodies of opposite sex. See his first meeting with Sayaka below.

  • Another thing I've observed is, Yaiba always assumes the role of protecting Sayaka. That, I have no further comments. The stronger sex must always protect the weaker sex, mm..., does Gosho want to emphasize that point?
